We’re thrilled to announce that on Friday, June 13, during the 17th Mediterranean Workshop and Topical Meeting “Novel Optical Materials and Applications” (NOMA) in Cetraro, Italy, Dr. Bryan Roberto Guilcapi (ISASI-CNR) will present the latest groundbreaking results from the PRIN 2022 project, funded through the NextGenerationEU program.
🔬 Project Highlight: SENSOSTEC
Title: “SENSOSTEC – Development of a Plasmonic Nanobiosensor for the Rapid Diagnosis of Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli Infections at the Point of Care”
Project Code: CUP B53D23019990006
Coordinator: Dr. Lucia Petti, Senior Researcher at ISASI-CNR and Head of the NANOphotonic and SMART Materials Research Team
In collaboration with:
- Dr. Maurizio Brigotti – University of Bologna (DIMEC)
- Dr. Stefano Morabito – Director, European Reference Laboratory for E. coli, Istituto Superiore di SanitĂ
đź’ˇ What is SENSOSTEC?
SENSOSTEC aims to develop ultrasensitive plasmonic nanobiosensors, both rigid and flexible, for rapid point-of-care detection of Shiga toxins in blood and stool samples. The innovation integrates:
- Electron-beam lithography-based metastructures
- Self-assembled gold nanoparticles
These cutting-edge platforms will enable:
âś… Early detection of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections
âś… Differential diagnosis between STEC-related HUS and atypical HUS (aHUS)
âś… Improved clinical decision-making that is safer, faster, and more accurate
🚀 Why It Matters
This research sits at the intersection of nanotechnology, photonics, and medical diagnostics, representing a major advancement in next-generation healthcare tools. By bringing lab-grade sensitivity to the point of care, SENSOSTEC could significantly enhance infectious disease management and patient safety worldwide.
📍 Stay tuned for more live updates from NOMA 2025 as we continue to push the boundaries of science and innovation!
